Barbie-
Greta Gerwig directed this fantasy comedy movie that is based on Mattel’s Barbie fashion dolls. This is the first live-action Barbie movie following several computer-animated films and specials.
The plot follows Barbie navigating self-discovery and existential crisis as she leaves her seemingly perfect and colorful world of Barbie Land to live in the real world where she discovers the perils and joys of living with humans. Ken also tags along with her of course.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling portrayed Barbie and Ken in the movie. It was released in the United States on 21st July this year. The movie became the second-highest-grossing film of 2023 and the highest-grossing live-action movie solely directed by a woman.
They Cloned Tyrone-
This American sci-fi comedy mystery movie follows an unlikely trio whose members uncover a government cloning conspiracy.
John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx portrayed the trio- Fontaine / Old Fontaine / Chester / Tyrone, Yo-Yo, and Slick Charles respectively in the movie. It was released this year on Netflix on 21st July.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves-
This American fantasy heist comedy movie is based on the tabletop role-playing game known as Dungeons & Dragons.
The movie bears no connection to the previous film trilogy. The plot follows a charming thief with a band of unlikely adventures embarking upon a quest to retrieve a long-lost relic to find themselves in danger in the middle of the wrong people.
Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant are cast members of the movie. It was released this year in the United States on 31st March.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3-
This superhero movie is based on Marvel Comics’ eponymous superhero team and is a sequel to the 2014 and 2017 films. The plot finds the guardians embarking upon a mission of protecting Rocket from High Evolutionary. The movie was released in the United States this year on 5th May.
Elemental-
Peter Sohn directed this computer-animated romantic comedy-drama film the plot of which revolves around the fire element and water element falling in love after a plumbing accident summons the latter at a convenience store owned by the former’s father Bernie.
Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie gave voice to the characters of the fire element Ember Lumen and the water element Wade Ripple in the movie. It premiered this year at the Cannes Film Festival on 26th May.
The Little Mermaid-
Rob Marshall directed this musical romantic fantasy movie that is the live-action adaptation of the same named 1989 animated movie of Disney both of which are loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen’s same-titled 1837 fairy tale.
Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, and Melissa McCarthy were cast in the roles of Ariel, Eric, and Ursula respectively. It was released in the United States on 26th May this year.
The Magician’s Elephant-
This computer-animated fantasy adventure film is adapted from Kate DiCamillo’s same-named 2009 novel.
The plot finds Peter on a quest of searching for his long-lost sister Adele as a fortune teller tells him to ask for a magician who has an elephant.
Noah Jupe voices the character of orphan Peter in the movie. It was released on Netflix this year on 17th March.
Peter Pan & Wendy (2023)-
David Lowery directed this fantasy adventure movie that is adapted from the 1953 animated movie of Walt Disney both of which are based on J. M. Barrie’s play of 1904- ‘Peter Pan; the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up’.
The plot finds Peter Pan, Wendy with the latter’s brothers and the former’s best friend Tinker Bell embarking upon a life-changing adventure that also involves Captain Hook, the archenemy of Peter.
Alexander Molony, Ever Anderson, Yara Shahidi, and Jude Law played Peter, Wendy, Tinker Bell, and Captain Hook respectively in the movie. It was released this year on April 28.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie-
This American computer-animated adventure comedy movie is based on the Mario video game franchise.
The plot focuses upon the origin story of Italian-American plumber brothers Mario and Luigi who, in an alternate world, become involved in a battle between the Princess Peach-led Mushroom Kingdom and the Bowser-led Koopas. The movie was released this year on April 5.
Renfield-
Chris McKay directed this action comedy horror movie that is inspired by the characters of Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’.
The plot focuses upon the titular character who had been a tortured aide of Dracula for centuries and is now seeking for a life outside his shadow.
Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage were cast in the roles of Renfield and Dracula respectively in the movie. It was released this year on 14th April.
