The American Fiction trailer shows a Black author’s stereotype-ridden humor novel becoming an unexpected hit.

The official teaser for American Fiction is now available, presenting a humorous, realistic look at the reality of being a black novelist. This seems like it will be a funny film, and Wright has hit the nail on the head with this performance.

American Fiction Official Trailer

American Fiction, starring Jeffrey Wright, has a fascinating and hilarious trailer.

Writing a best-seller takes a lot of talent, ingenuity, and luck, but in the new teaser for American Fiction, Jeffrey Wright has found another way to fake it to the big time.

Wright plays author Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, who is trying to regain the steady popularity he once had with his works. When he realizes what’s popular these days, he’s so horrified that he tries to publish his version of a best-selling “Black book” under a different name.

Monk first becomes aware of the situation of Black literature when he attends a discussion with author Sintara Golden, who declares her best-selling novel a victory for portrayal before reading a stereotype-laden excerpt.

Meanwhile, his novels are regarded as “good but not well-known,” and he has been told that “editors want Black books.” So he creates a scathing parody filled with spelling mistakes and other stereotyped themes, such as drugs and deadbeat parents.

It turns out to be the “most profitable joke you’ve ever told,” as his book, published under the pen name Stagg R. Leigh, sells and begins shipping copies at an alarming pace.

Monk is suddenly trying to keep up appearances and pretend to be the wanted criminal Leigh while basking in money and even a movie contract starring Michael B. Jordan.

Monk’s impact is shown when he states, “I wish I could go back to not selling books.” Sure, he’s benefitting handsomely from this charade, using the establishment’s bias to his advantage, but there’s a cost.

Not only is he betraying his ideals and ethics, but it appears that despite being the talk of the town, “Stagg R. Leigh” continues to be treated as less than.
