The Shogun Trailer Recreates a Fighting Japan Based On The Classic Novel

The latest trailer for Shogun, a television series about a European sailor who escapes a shipwreck in feudal Japan, has been released by FX.

Shogun is a period drama based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name. It took place just before the onset of Japan’s isolationist policy, which effectively blocked it from commerce or immigration with the majority of other nations. It also marks a watershed moment in Japanese history, with the end of the Sengoku era and the emergence of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

The trailer for Shogun, an ambitious-looking limited series adapted from author James Clavell’s best-selling novel, clearly shows that this is a blockbuster-level production, which explains why we haven’t heard anything about it for so long.

Shogun is set in medieval Japan in the 1600s and stars Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, who looks at a Civil War unravel while the Japanese struggle with Europeans – and he’s presented with an odd alliance that might tilt the scales in his favor.

Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a lady stuck between her faith and her ancestry from a disgraced family, will be the thread that links Japanese and European revolutionaries.

The trailer hints that Shgun will be a must-see television. The trailer has an appropriately epic context, with wide shots of nature and towns set against scenes of war mustering and high seas adventure.

We also see some of the series’ political posturing and home chaos, with murder, war, and what looks to be a thrilling jail speech scene all teased.

The official synopsis for Shogun reads as follows: “The collision of two ambitious men from distinct worlds and an elusive female samurai: John Blackthorne, an adventurous English sailor who ends up stranded in Japan, a land whose unaccustomed culture will eventually redefine him; Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo at odds with his own lethal, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills.
