Erykah Badu will star in the Netflix movie The Piano Lesson! Samuel L. Jackson and Golden Globe nominee John David Washington are scheduled to star in The Piano Lesson, a new Netflix feature film.
You may recognize the title of this movie if you have previously seen the play with the same name written by American author August Wilson.
Netflix announced in March 2021 that it would adapt another of Wilson’s pieces, The Piano Lesson.
Wilson’s play is the second to be converted into a film by Netflix, with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom already being adapted.
The Piano Lesson Movie Netflix Release Date:
The Piano Lesson release date has yet to be confirmed by Netflix, but considering its April 2023 production start, it stands to reason that the film will be released somewhere in the second half of 2024.

The cast of The Piano Lesson Netflix Movie:
The film will star Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington. Jackson will play Doaker Charles, while Washington will play Doaker’s nephew, Boy Willie. Ray Fisher and Michael Potts, Jackson and Washington’s other co-stars from the play, also join them in the cast.
The Grammy Award-winning singer Erykah Badu joined the cast on May 30. Presenting “her soulful sound and eclectic style” with musical performances.

Malcolm Washington will direct the film, which he co-wrote with Virgil Williams. Constanza Romero, Jennifer Roth, and Katia Washington have also joined as executive producers.

What is The Piano Lesson Netflix Movie about?
The film will be an adaptation of Wilson’s 1987 play of the same name and will depict the narrative of the Charles family in 1936 Pittsburgh amid the Great Depression’s aftermath.
The drama follows Doaker Charles, the head of the Charles home, and the family relic, a piano ornamented with decorations carved by slave predecessors.

The Charles family’s ornately carved upright piano, which they worked hard to acquire and value greatly, has been left unused and collecting dust in the parlor of Berniece Charles’s Pittsburgh home.
When Berniece’s energetic brother, Boy Willie, bursts into her life with his desire to purchase the Mississippi property where his family had labored as enslaved people, he intends to sell their vintage piano for the hard cash he requires to stake his future.
But Berniece refused to sell, clinging to the piano as a memento of their family’s history. This difficulty is the true “piano lesson,” reminding us that blacks are frequently robbed of symbols of their history and opportunities in the present.”
