The upcoming movie ‘Luther: The Fallen Sun’ is a crime drama film. Jamie Payne has directed the movie that serves as a continuation of the same named British tv series that ran from 2010 to 2019.
British psychological crime thriller series ‘Luther’ is an award winner tv show that won eleven Primetime Emmy nominations and cast English actor Idris Elba in the main role.
The upcoming movie is a re-imagination and continuation of the tv series that revolves around John Luther, a brilliant detective who becomes disgraced after being framed for a murder.
He is haunted by his failure sitting behind the bar and decides to break out of the imprisonment and go on a run. In the meantime, London is being terrorized by a gruesome serial killer.

When Is ‘Luther: The Fallen Sun’ Releasing?
The possibility of a movie adaptation based on a prequel to the tv series first came into reality in August 2013. Then in July 2020, Idris Elba declared that no plans for another series of the show are under planning but he is willing to return for this role in a movie.
In September 2021, the film was confirmed to be released on Netflix. Cast members Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo also joined the cast with Elba that month.
Primary filming began on November 10, 2021. Luther: The Fallen Sun is scheduled to premiere in selected cinemas on February 24, 2023. On Netflix, the film will arrive on 10th March this year.

Who Are the Cast Members of the Upcoming Movie ‘Luther: The Fallen Sun’:
Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo, and Andy Serkis are the primary cast members of the upcoming movie.
Idris Elba-
English actor Idris Elba created the character of Luther in the tv series in 2010. In the movie too Elba will be seen reprising this role.
For her portrayal of Luther in the tv series Elba won a nomination for British Academy Television Awards as Best Actor and four nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie.
He also won a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe Award for the series. Among Elba’s other tv series, there is the crime drama series ‘The Wire’ in which he starred from 2002 to 2004 portraying Russell “Stringer” Bell.
He created the British comedy-drama series ‘In the Long Run’ which ran from 2018 to 2020 in which he was also cast starring as Walter Easmon. Elba is also set to star in the 2023 upcoming thriller miniseries ‘Hijack’ as Sam Nelson.
Elba has been cast in a number of films too which include ‘The Losers‘, ‘Thor‘, ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom‘, ‘Beasts of No Nation‘, ‘The Dark Tower‘, ‘Cats’, ‘The Suicide Squad‘, ‘The Harder They Fall‘, ‘Beast‘, ‘Three Thousand Years of Longing‘ etc.
Elba was nominated for a British Academy Film Award as Best Actor in a Supporting Role for ‘Beasts of No Nation’.
Cynthia Erivo-
English actress and singer Cynthia Erivo will be starring as an associate of Luther in the upcoming movie.
Erivo was nominated for two Academy Awards one of which is as Best Actress for her role in the biographical movie ‘Harriet’ portraying Araminta “Minty” Ross / Harriet Tubman and another for Best Original Song.
Her other film credits include ‘Widows’, ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’, ‘Chaos Walking‘, ‘Needle in a Timestack‘, ‘Pinocchio’, ‘And Drift’, the latter of which was only released on January 22, 2023, at Sundance International Film Festival.
Besides ‘Luther: The Fallen Sun’, Elba is also set to star in another upcoming movie which is an epic musical fantasy movie ‘Wicked: Part One’. The movie is still being filmed and it will arrive next year. Elba will star as Elphaba in that movie.
Erivo starred as a series regular in the role of Holly Gibney in the 2020 psychological thriller horror crime drama series ‘The Outsider’ adapted from the 2018 same-named novel by Stephen King. The next year she was cast in the main role of Aretha Franklin in the anthology period drama series ‘Genius’.
Andy Serkis-
English actor director and producer Andy Serkis will be seen starring in the upcoming movie as David Robey, a tech billionaire and serial killer who manipulates and kills civilians through the use of surveillance technology.
Serkis gave voice to the role of Gollum in the film trilogy of Lord of the Rings. Serkis’ other film credits include ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll‘, ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes‘, ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘, ‘War for the Planet of the Apes‘, ‘King Kong’ etc.
Serkis also starred in the 2006 British biographical crime tv film ‘Longford’ in the role of Ian Brady for which he was nominated as Best Actor for the British Academy Television Award in 2006.
