The cast is changing dramatically, with Gibbs only appearing in a few episodes and Ellie Bishop (Emily Wickersham) departing at the season 18 finale. With the new season approaching, many are wondering if Cole’s character would take the place of Gibbs in season 19 and beyond.

However, CBS allegedly feared that if the celebrity departed, the program would be canceled, so an arrangement was reached for him to just appear a few times. If Harmon does depart the show after season 19, CBS is likely to examine backup plans, with Cole a potential possibility to fill his shoes.
