Xolo Mariduena Discusses the Batgirl Cancellation

I was wondering what Xolo Mariduena thought about the cancellation of Batgirl. With the addition of Shazam! to the 2023 DC film slate, that year is shaping up to be massive. The gods of Fury arrive first, then The Flash, Blue Beetle, Aquaman, and ultimately the Lost Kingdom.

Batgirl will not be joining them, as the show was cancelled by Warner Bros. Discovery a while back. Now, Xolo Mariduena, who played the title role in Blue Beetle with Leslie Grace, has spoken out against the film’s cancellation.

Xolo Mariduena, who played Miguel Diaz on the popular Netflix series Cobra Kai, has been in the role of Jaime Reyes in Blue Beetle for a little over a year now.

Mariduea was interviewed by THR to promote the upcoming fifth season of Cobra Kai and his work on Blue Beetle, and he also shared his thoughts on the cancellation of Batgirl.

In response, he said, “Obviously, it feels extremely close, right?” Beetle and Warner Bros. Unfortunately, I feel like have spoken all that can be said on the matter at hand. As far as I’m concerned, the writers and Leslie covered all the bases.

Here is What more Xolo Mariduena says about Batgirl Cancellation.

Xolo Mariduena

Xolo Mariduena is being deliberately equivocal here, opting to let the statements made by Leslie Grace and Batgirl filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah in response to the film’s cancellation do the talking.

The tone of his silence suggests Mariduea is sympathetic to their plight; he just isn’t ready to state his position explicitly. As with Batgirl, Blue Beetle was originally planned for an HBO Max exclusive release before it was announced in December that movie will instead be distributed in theatres.

Since both Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt were far into post-production when they were cancelled in early August, it’s unclear why. Warner Bros. Discovery opted to seek a tax exemption on Batgirl, which had a reported production budget of $90 million, rather than pump further money into the film so that it could be released to theatres.

The cast and crew of Batgirl were able to attend viewings of the final edit of the film for one more time before it was put away permanently. Even while there were fears that Blue Beetle would go the way of Batgirl and be cancelled, it now appears that the Xolo Mariduena-led film will really debut in the summer of 2023 as planned.

In the Blue Beetle comics, Jaime Reyes is bonded to an alien scarab that provides him with a suit of high-tech armour equipped with a variety of weaponry and defense mechanisms; Xolo Mariduena’s Jaime Reyes will do the same.

Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Harvey Guillén, Susan Sarandon, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Trujillo are just some of the other actors in Blue Beetle. Both Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala) contributed to the film’s creative team.

Blue Beetle is currently scheduled for an August 18, 2023 release date, but if there are any changes to the release calendar for upcoming DC movies, you can be sure that we’ll keep you updated. Anyone with a Netflix account as of September 9 can watch Xolo Mariduena in Cobra Kai Season 5.
