Chadwick Boseman Wins Posthumous Emmy Award for Voice-Over Role in Marvel’s ‘What If…?’ Series

Chadwick Boseman was given an Emmy Award after he died. On Saturday night at the Creative Arts Emmys, the actor won for his role in Marvel’s What If…? series. He died in August 2020 at the age of 43 from colon cancer.

Chadwick won an outstanding character voice-over performance award for playing Star-Lord T’Challa in the episode “What If… T’Challa Became a Star-Lord?”

In the same category as him were F. Murray Abraham (Moon Knight), Julie Andrews (Bridgerton), Maya Rudolph (Big Mouth), Stanley Tucci (Central Park), Jessica Walter (Archer), and Jeffrey Wright (What If…?).

This was Chadwick’s first nomination for and won an Emmy.

Simone Ledward Boseman, who was married to Chadwick before he died, accepted the award on his behalf. Simone took the stage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and told the crowd about how her late husband recorded the part while he had health problems.

“When I heard that Chad was nominated for this award, I started thinking about everything that was going on when he was recording—everything that was going on in the world and our world—and I was just in awe of his commitment and dedication,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

“And what a beautifully aligned moment it is that one of the last things he would work on would not only be revisiting a character that was so important to him, his career, and the world but also that it would be an exploration of something new, diving into a new possible future — especially with everything he said about the purpose and finding the reason you are on the planet at this very time”.

Simone said. “You can’t figure out your purpose unless you’re willing to ask, “What if?” and say, “What if the universe is working for me? What if it’s me?”

Chadwick died on August 28, 2020, from colon cancer. In 2016, he was told he had stage III colon cancer. Over the next four years, it got worse and reached stage IV.

In What If…?, Yondu changes a version of Chadwick’s Black Panther character into Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill, as in the original Guardians of the Galaxy story.

Some of the most popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like Thor and Peggy Carter, are shown in animated form in the show. Many of these characters are voiced by their longtime live-action actors.

In the 2018 movie Black Panther, Chadwick played the canonical version of King T’Challa. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a sequel, will be in theatres this November. Most of the original cast will be back, as will director and co-writer Ryan Coogler.

But what if…? is now available to watch on Disney+.
