PS3 System Update Catches Owners By Surprise

PS3 System Updates: PS3 has received a brand-new system software update 4.88, which took fans by surprise. It has been 14 years since the console released.

This update has surprised everyone. At a time when the PS5 is in the news, nobody expected a software update on the PS3. The PS3’s 4.87 firmware update went live back in December 2020, and it demanded a total of 200 MB free space on the hard drive.

This update basically improved the system stability on the seventh-generation hardware. It also updated the Blu-ray keys for new releases and had a security fix as well.

Many would-bes are happy about the fact that Sony is still trying to support its consoles even after so many years. And it proves to be even more promising when we know the fact that the manufacturer could soon abandon its legacy devices.

Concerns like this arose when news spread that the digital stores of PSP, PS3, and PS Vita were going offline in 2021. But Sony clarified its stand afterward. They stated that PSP’s stores will shutter on July 2, but the PS3 and PS Vita stores will continue to operate as normal.

WikiPedia

On June 1, PlayStation rolled out a Firmware Update 4.88 for the popular PlayStation 3. A post on the brand’s official support page informs PS3 owners that at least 200 MB of free space is required on either the internal disk drive or any removable storage.

If we take a look at what the 4.88 really offers, the aforementioned support listing merely makes mention of unspecified extra features, as well as “improved usability and enhanced security”. Many of the PS3 users were surprised by this recent update.

The fact that Sony’s software support still exists even after 14 years of the initial release is appreciable. Though we don’t know the fact that till when would this old console still be supported, we must be practical with our expectations. There are commitments of Sony with their rather modern PS4s and all, we’ll have to see how they manage all this.

Everyone’s eyes are on the PS5, it’s all in the news. And this may mean that the software support for the PS3 may end soon. But Sony is not keen by any means to inform its users about the exact date of the end of support.
