Joel Crawford will direct the film, while Mark Swift will produce it. The two previously collaborated on the DreamWorks sequel The Croods: A New Age, which earned them a Golden Globe nod for Best Picture. Januel Mercado, who worked on The Croods’ creative team, will also serve as co-director on the sequel to Puss in Boots.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is the long-awaited sequel that fans have been waiting for almost a decade. Following the commercial success of the original picture, which grossed over $554 million worldwide, it looked like a no-brainer for DreamWorks and Universal to approve a sequel.

However, due to internal constraints within DreamWorks, the project has been publicized and shelved several times over the last decade.

Bob Persichetti, the previous film’s Head of Story and later the co-director of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, directed the sequel, which was originally titled Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves. Latifa Ouaou, the original Puss in Boots producer, is also expected to return.

Crawford, Mercado, and Swift took over the project when Persichetti and Ouaou left for undisclosed reasons. DreamWorks has confirmed that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will be released in theaters on September 23, 2022, with no further delays expected. According to reports, the film’s first teaser will debut on March 15 and will reintroduce fans to the fearless feline they’ve grown to love.
