Conjuring 3: Is David Glatzel’s story a hoax?

Conjuring 3 Updates: Was David Glatzel’s story in The Conjuring true? The story has been called a hoax by some, including his family.

The demon possession story that has been featured in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, has been called a hoax by many including David Glatzel. David Glatzel’s possession story was not the film’s main focus but it led to the main plot. The main plot involved Arne Johnson who claimed that he was forced into murder by a demonic curse. It all started when Arne got involved in the exorcism of his girlfriend’s younger brother, David Glatzel.

Ed and Lorrain Warren struggle to purge an evil entity from the body of young David. In a way to save the boy, Arne permitted the spirit to leave David and possess him instead. This leads him into a murder trial as he claims to have been forced to commit the crime by the demon that possessed him. The film is a dramatized version of the true story, though part of it is fiction. The Glatzel portion of the story is true which originated from the real-life accounts of Arne Johnson and the Warrens and also a tape that supposedly contains the audio of the actual exorcism.

Conjuring 3: Details

Though the Warrens, Debbie Glatzel, and Arne Johnson claim that the events are true, David Glatzel’s brother, Carl Glatzel says that the story was fabricated. When the book based on the incidents, The Devil in Connecticut, got a reprint in 2006, both Carl and David sued her saying that it was a breach of their privacy and caused ’emotional distress’. Later, Carl said that David’s problems were not supernatural but arose from his issues with mental health.

Carl accused Ed and Lorraine Warren of taking advantage of their family’s situation as they saw it as a ‘gold mine’. Lorraine countered that it was actually Carl who was trying to make a profit with his lawsuit. The author of the book, Gerald Brittle said supporting Lorraine that he wrote the book using approved quotes and stories from the Glatzel family, who was paid $2,000 by the publisher. However, David’s father, Carl Sr. denied telling Brittle about David’s possession. The case was ultimately dismissed but the book was still removed from print.

However, David Glatzel himself has avoided the limelight since the events of Conjuring 3. Carl has revealed that even though David has had a hard time dealing with all the attention, his mental health has since recovered. Carl’s character does not appear in the exorcism scene in Conjuring 3 probably because of his issue with the story.
