Grey’s Anatomy Season 18: Why Will Meredith End Up With Hayes?

Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Updates: The creators of Grey’s Anatomy appear to be establishing Dr. Cormac Hayes as Meredith’s potentially ideal love companion as the show continues to follow her.

The writers of Grey’s Anatomy appear to be establishing Dr. Cormac Hayes as Meredith’s possibly ideal love partner as the show continues to chronicle her life and profession. The blockbuster medical drama has a lengthy history of introducing new beaus for its eponymous character – after all, the first episode began in the middle of Meredith’s first night with Derek Shepherd. Meredith’s love entanglements have been infrequent and, for the most part, brief since Derek’s unexpected death in season 11. Could Dr. Hayes, a.k.a. “McWidow,” alter everything before the end of the series?

Given the two’s early encounters, such a query would have seemed nearly absurd to many. Hayes, who had previously worked with Cristina Yang in Switzerland, transferred to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital’s pediatric surgery department, eventually becoming the Head of Pediatric Surgery in the aftermath of Alex Karev’s unexpected departure from the show. Almost immediately, the Irish surgeon clashed with Meredith, frequently questioning her medical judgments and ignoring her renowned Harper Avery Award victory.

Hayes, like so many other prior and original Grey’s Anatomy characters, was proven to be more than he looked. Meredith and the audience gradually discovered more about the newcomer’s recent history, which left him a single parent following the terrible loss of his late wife, Abigail.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 18: Meredith End Up With Hayes

The writers of the show have periodically incorporated flashback scenes to help fill out Hayes’ background, thus transforming the initially chilly guy Meredith encountered into a considerably more sympathetic and approachable character. In summary, Hayes’ tale, which features steadfast endurance in the face of enormous personal tragedy, parallels Meredith’s.

On a narrative level, the concept of a Meredith-Cormac pairing is appealing due to their shared experience and proven tenacity. Because the former’s earlier arc revolved heavily around Meredith and Derek (the seasons-long “will-they-or-won’t-they” drama, their professional competence, and, later, dealing with his death), his specter still looms large on the show, and a conclusion in which Meredith ends up with someone else may be difficult to reconcile for some fans.

However, given Hayes’ personal experience with grief, he will be the first to recognize that he will never be able to entirely replace Derek, just as Meredith will never be able to fully replace Abigail. Instead, with each other, they may be granted the liberty to pursue new pleasure while remembering the partners who, though gone, helped form them.

All of this is not to suggest that Dr. Meredith Grey needs to find love before the program ends – she is a brilliant surgeon, a great person, and the glue that holds her family and town together. Grey’s Anatomy season 17 has, however, not-so-subtly paired off several of its other main actors, maybe in preparation for a series wrap-up. Jackson relocated to Boston with his ex-wife, April. Schmidt and Nico, Catherine and Richard, Teddy and Owen, and Catherine and Richard have all reconciled. Maggie married Winston in a lovely sun-kissed wedding. So, with so many characters having their happily ever afters, why shouldn’t Meredith have hers as well?

With so many seasons of Grey’s Anatomy under our belts, it’s easy to forget that much of the show’s early plot was designed to pit Meredith against her dying mother. Ellis Grey, a skilled surgeon, drove everyone away from her, effectively dying alone. With so much of Season 17 focused on Meredith’s personal life-or-death fight, it’s no surprise that she was surrounded by a tiny army of individuals who had come to love and respect her.

Meredith Grey is an award-winning surgeon and outstanding doctor despite her personal connections. Instead, they strengthen it, coupled with her enthusiasm and willingness to occasionally break the rules to accomplish what’s right. If the series concludes with Meredith’s happy marriage to Hayes, it may be unmistakable proof that, unlike her mother, she is capable of having it all. She’s definitely earned it after so many years of struggle, development, and tragedy.
