Hiei was born in a conservative tribe of Ice Apparitions where it was a sin to have offsprings, but the birth of girls was allowed. However, Hiei’s mother defied the rules of the tribe and gave birth to Hiei with a Fire demon thus resulting in Hiei receiving the hatred of the tribe. As a result, he was thrown off a cliff when he was just an infant.

Luckily, he survived the incident and was rescued by a group of bandits which changed the entire course of his life. He took the path of violence and cruelty and committed many crimes. Thus, the abandonement and the attempt to kill him led to the start of his life as a villain.

When Hiei and Kurama met

The coalition of Hiei and Kurama brought in major changes to Hiei’s life and thus brought him to adapt a different path of life. The meeting between the two was first shown in a one-shot manga that wasn’t adapted to the anime until the OVA came in. Hiei is convinced that a demon, Yatsude has devoured his sister Yukina and so he teams up with Kurama to avenge her death.

Hiei hardly trusts someone but his partnership with Kurama makes him change his ways and helps him to get along with others. Until this time, Hiei was known for killing anyone who dared to help him. But Kurama became one of the very few characters who opened up with Hiei and whom Hiei trusts.

When Yusuke defeats Hiei

Comic Book

Hiei’s fight with Yusuke was the beginning of the huge transformation of Hiei from villain to hero. While the fight denoted that Yusuke was much stronger than Hiei but it also made Hiei realise a lot of things. Yusuke refuted everything Hiei believed. Hiei saw himself as a lone warrior who could ask for favour when in need from Kurama or few others. But Yusuke showed him what power of friendship is really and thus led Hiei to mend his ways.

Hiei’s life was at the mercy of someone else for the first time but was forgiven by Yusuke  and the Spirit Realm for his crimes. This led to softening of Hiei’s heart.

When Hiei Rescued his Sister Yukina

Yukina was the first one to have a tender relationship with Hiei. He always cared for her unconditionally and tried to protect her always no matter what. His feelings for his sister is revealed when he meets Kurama. We also see him put all his efforts while rescuing her from the kidnapper Gonzo Tarukane.

Hiei doesn’t kill Gonzo but shows him his determination to save his sister at any cost and also manages to save her from the evil. It is from this point when he begins opening up with his sister and also others which proves to be essential as the series moves on.

Hiei’s birthday gift to Mukuro

Mukuro — one of the three kings of the demon world – in Yu Yu Hakusho’s final arc. She had a very dark and difficult past with her father abusing her and treating her violently.
