A Spy Has Countless Faces in the Latest Trailer of HBO & A24’s ‘The Sympathizer’
The trailer for The Sympathizer makes it hard to figure out what is happening, which is the film’s goal. The buzzy upcoming Max series crosses genres and tones, tilts from tragic to satirical, and covers the complicated history of the post-Vietnam War era—all anchored by a mysterious, unknown spy (Hoa Xuande) in its center.
The fact that Downey portrays multiple different scary avatars of American imperialism is only the tip of the iceberg regarding The Sympathizer’s several levels of mystery and deception.
The Sympathizer is a story recounted from the viewpoint of a half-Vietnamese, half-French communist spy who works as a North Vietnamese mole but is confused by his sense of comradery towards the South Vietnamese army.
The Captain, as he is known, runs to America after the fall of Saigon & the following slaughter, in which many of his close friends are killed. Much of the story focuses on The Captain’s dual identity, and this dynamic only grows with his move to America.
He continues to work as a mole for the North Vietnamese, meeting various intriguing people and starting a couple of affairs.
He also volunteers to work as a consultant for an American film on the Vietnam War but finds it to be overly idealized and almost dies while filming. Love interest Sandra Oh, as well as Downey‘s CIA spymaster, recognize his chameleon-like traits.

The Cast and Crew of The Sympathizer.
The Captain will be played by actor Hoa Xuande, who previously played Lin in Netflix’s live-action Cowboy Bebop series. The series’ cast features Alan Trong as Sonny, Fred Nguyen Khan as Bon, Toan Le as the General, Duy Nguyễn as Man, & Vy Le as Lana.
Robert Downey Jr. is going to appear in the series, playing a variety of antagonistic characters. The actor is well-known worldwide for portraying Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) plays Ms. Sofia Mori, Ky Duyen plays Madame, VyVy Nguyen (Young Sheldon) is the Major’s Wife, Kayli Tran (Ambulance) is the Communist Spy, & Kieu Chinh (The Joy Luck Club) is the Major’s Mother.
The Sympathizer premieres on HBO on Sunday, April 14.
