Ayrton Senna da Silva, the iconic Brazilian racing driver, left a memorable mark on Formula 1 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport.

Throughout his career, Senna achieved remarkable success, becoming a three-time world champion while driving for McLaren. His impressive record includes 41 Grand Prix victories, a feat that held the record for most positions until 2006.

Tragically, on May 1st, 1994, during the San Marino Grand Prix, a devastating accident altered the course of history.

On the seventh lap of the race, Senna’s car veered off the track at an astonishing speed of 196 miles per hour (309 km/h) and collided with an unprotected concrete barrier after leaving the racing line at Tamburello. The impact inflicted severe head injuries, causing Senna’s heart to stop beating.

Despite the valiant efforts of medical personnel at the race, they were able to revive him temporarily using a life support machine until his family could arrange for final religious rites to be performed.

In a tragic twist of fate, it was later revealed that Senna had planned to honor the late driver Roland Ratzenberger, who had tragically died during qualifying the day before, by unfurling an Austrian flag hidden in his car’s cockpit.

The Brazilian government declared three days of national mourning as Senna’s body was flown back to Brazil for a state funeral. The streets of his hometown, São Paulo, were filled with over three million mourning fans paying their respects to their beloved hero.

This tragic weekend, which claimed the lives of two drivers and witnessed numerous dangerous collisions, prompted crucial safety improvements by the FIA, the governing body of Formula 1.

Each year, ongoing efforts are made to enhance the safety of drivers, ensuring that their lives are protected on the race track.
