Hanzawa, a young guy with a sinister-looking silhouette, makes his first appearance in The Culprit Hanzawa before migrating to the dangerous town of Beika. Finding an affordable, stigma-free place to live in is his priority.

After failing to find one, he eventually locates a shared-living apartment and becomes friends with Hanbayashi, who resembles him. However, Hanbayashi executes the murder and is caught for it, whereas Hanzawa fantasizes about killing a certain someone.

Hanzawa travels to the town hall and the police station, where he must update and renew his license to obtain the necessary paperwork to begin residing in Beika Town. The next adventure begins when Hanzawa can’t get his hair to fall out because he can’t locate shampoo in the bathroom.

He then walks around the town searching for a grocery to buy, but there are none. The next nightmare has Hanzawa mistakenly purchasing a knife from the weapons store late at night when he is severely conned. Ran Mouri finally deals with the scamming mafia with whom he also comes into contact.

Hanzawa must find employment, which is difficult in Beika, with the bit of money he has left over. In addition, he has no way to cover the rent for the following month. Hiroshi Agasa, an elderly guy in a coat who seems suspicious, finally offers him a job. To Hanzawa’s dismay and fear, the task requires being struck by a tranquilizer dart that can put an elephant to sleep.

Later, Hanzawa secures employment at a video store. The position appears promising, but when he arrives at work, he discovers that the manager has been murdered. The case is quickly solved by all of the current investigators in front of Hanzawa.

Realizing they are all store employees, he ultimately complies with their demands to conceal their identities while posing as workers and working as investigators in the evenings. The job is satisfying, but Hanzawa constantly fills in for his coworkers. First, he visits a pet store to get a new pet he can trust and who is also obedient.

Although Hakuba pays the premium for the fluffiest and cutest pomeranian puppy, his heart belongs to her. Later, after overhearing his roommates making fun of his silly, rural attire, Hanzawa decides to stock up on the newest fashions. According to a Beika Town urban legend, he ultimately purchases all-black clothing, which is highly unlucky.

When Hanzawa senses eyes on him from behind, the urban legend becomes true, and he finally has to give up the trends for his safety and return to his old outfits. Hanzawa’s mother comes to visit him, which embarrasses him.

He lashes out at her and declines to go on the tower tour with her. He rushes out to save her when he hears there are hostages in the same tower, but when he gets there, she is sitting on a bench eating cotton candy because she was unable to get there in time for the catastrophe.

Hanzawa arrived in Beika long ago, yet he can still not locate the guy he intends to murder. He eventually finds him after several public services and attempts to change his fortunes. When he tries to murder him, he is unsuccessful in doing so and then realizes that it is the master thief known as “Kid,” who resembles the person he truly intended to track down and kill.
