Shanty Town Recap and Review

Shanty Town
Netflix

The show is set in a small Lagos town called Shanty Town and follows the lives of s*x workers led by a tyrannical handler named Scar. The episode opens with some backstory about a family escaping invaders after losing all they owned.

However, two of the family members are killed, and one of the daughters is kidnapped by a drug gang that also operates as a prostitution ring.

In the modern day, some in the ring desire to be free. They wish to leave Shanty Town’s connection with the s*x trade and start their own lives somewhere.

The storyline should have arrived by now, but it has yet to. The first two episodes will be spent in extensive explanation as viewers try to understand the world and its rules. There is little reason for us to keep watching this show.

Instead, the show devolves into horrific violence and gore for no apparent reason. It has no value in creating an impact or a positive character trait.

The first two episodes will be spent in extensive explanation as viewers try to understand the world and its rules. There isn’t much reason for us to keep watching this show.

Unfortunately, the show devolves into horrific violence and gore for no apparent reason. It has no value in creating an impact or a positive character trait.

Aside from the widespread smoking, drinking, and drug usage, the show also promotes a simple and unremarkable style of filmmaking.

Even the end seems like a drooping papier-mache construction. There are loose strands, random action sequences, and absurd supernatural aspects that have nothing to do with the plot.

However, the acting of Chidi Mokeme and Ini Edo is the only thing that makes this show acceptable. They have displayed remarkable aptitude in expressing many emotions over the episodes.
