Len Cariou plays retired New York Police Commissioner Henry Reagan; his son, Frank (Tom Selleck), is the current PC; Frank’s son Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) is a detective and his younger son Jamie (Will Estes) is a sergeant; Frank’s daughter, Erin (Bridget Moynahan), is the assistant district attorney and has one daughter, Nicky; and Frank’s son Jamie (Will Estes) is a sergeant (Sami Gayle).

Although the program started with many more stars, such as Jennifer Esposito as Detective Jackie Curatola and Amy Carlson as Danny’s wife, Linda, the six actors listed above are the only ones who have been on the show from the beginning and are still on the show.

Esposito departed the show in the middle of season three after being diagnosed with celiac disease. CBS said at the time in a press statement that the actress was “unable to execute the rigors of her part and we, unfortunately, had to put her character on leave.”

Carlson, for her part, startled viewers by leaving the program after the season 7 finale had been taped. She was elevated to series regular in season 2 but decided to leave the program when her contract expired. Eventually, it was revealed during the season 8 opener that she died in a helicopter accident while on duty.

“I had a lovely seven years there and I’m incredibly thankful to CBS and it was an incredible experience,” she told Us Weekly exclusively in 2017. “I had a lot of fun portraying Donnie’s wife.” They treated me like a second family.

He and I constantly text. We’re still extremely close and good friends. For a long period, we were there for each other. He has spoken some of the sweetest things to the press about me and has never wavered in his support. He’s been really generous and a wonderful guy.”

When season 12 ended in April 2022, fans wondered whether the popular drama would be renewed for another season. Wahlberg expressed his desire to continue working on the project in an Instagram post following his last day on site for the season. “God willing,” he posted on Instagram at the time, with a photo of himself dressed as a police investigator.

Later that month, CBS confirmed the show’s renewal for season 13, with Kelly Kahl, the network’s president of Entertainment, assuring Variety that the show “dominates the ratings.”
