Mindhunter Season 3 Updates: Mindhunter, Netflix’s critically acclaimed thriller, ran for two fantastic seasons before taking what appeared to be an indefinite hiatus. But, now that there have been reports that the David Fincher-produced series may return for a third season, let’s take a look at that possibility.
While many assumed that Mindhunter was ‘probably’ over, a report by Small Screen suggests that there is renewed hope for a third season of the serial killer-themed series.
According to the report, which cites sources close to Netflix, talks between Netflix and the show’s director, executive producer, and co-showrunner David Fincher have resumed. Is this just a rumor, or should we expect to see Jonathan Groff return to the role of FBI agent Holden Ford?
Will there be Mindhunter Season 3 on Netflix
After reports surfaced in early 2020 claiming that Mindhunter season 3 would most likely not take place, David Fincher himself spoke out about the show’s fate. In October 2020, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker told Vulture that working on the show was very much important for him. The success of Mank, made it likely that Fincher’s relationship with Netflix is at an all-time high, making now the ideal time to return to Mindhunter for a third season.
Fincher and his team are not currently working on Season 3 of Mindhunter. It is quite uncertain to say when filming will begin because there doesn’t appear to be a definitive answer as to whether or not the show will continue.
Of course, it’s no secret that making Mindhunter taxed Fincher, who told Vulture last year that it takes a lot of effort to create something like Mindhunter. The work done in a week is 90 hours long. Everything other than this is absorbed in life. He was pretty exhausted when he finished the work and stated, ‘I’m not sure if it’s possible to break season three right now.’
Fincher also made a point of emphasizing how expensive the show was to produce. Despite his reservations, rumors have begun to circulate recently that Mindhunter season 3 may be in the works without much delay. Another reason for the show’s demise was its massive budget.
Currently, it appears that two of Fincher’s projects–Lange and Chinatown, on which he serves as producer–are in pre-production. If Mindhunter season 3 is confirmed, we believe Fincher will need to complete work on these two projects before beginning work on the Netflix show.
Mindhunter season 3 is yet to be announced, so don’t expect it to premiere on Netflix anytime soon, even if it is given the go-ahead sometime in the future.
