Can ‘Mr. Mayor’ be the next Tina Fey series to be break through at SAG awards?

Mr. Mayor Updates: Tina Fey has created two episodes that have received numerous SAG Award nominations, 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and at the 2021 awards, she might only add a third.

Her new sitcom for NBC, Mr. Mayor, with Holly Hunter, Vella Lovell, Mike Cabellon, Kyla Kenedy, and Bobby Moynihan filling out the cast, stars Ted Danson as a businessman vying for mayor in Los Angeles.

The show premieres on NBC on January 7, and although it will be considered ineligible for the upcoming SAG Awards for certain years, the 2020 circumstances mean that it will be on the ballot ahead of the release of nominations in February.

If Mr. Mayor happens to be a breakout success, at the very moment the SAG nomination committee is voting, it could be placed very well. In view of Fey’s pedigree, those electors might be more likely to search out Mr. Mayor and win five SAG Awards for 30 Rock.

In all, the show itself received 22 SAG awards, including a victory for the ensemble of the show, four individual wins for Fey, and an astonishing seven individual wins for Alec Baldwin.

For his four-season tenure, one for Tituss Burgess and two for Ellie Kemper, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt would receive three nominations.

Mr. Mayor: Nominations and awards:

With nine SAG nominations, four Emmys, and an Oscar in between, Danson and Hunter are no slouches in trophies either. What could also prove tough for Danson to get in for Mr. Mayor is that he would also be on the Nice Place ballot, but the recurrence of Mr. Mayor could give it a boost given the display ended a year earlier.

The Screen Actors Guild is notorious for skewing more towards existing shows, but breaking through so easily would be an uphill fight for Fey’s new season. But even though it doesn’t land awards in 2021, if the public listens to it well enough, Mr. Mayor may be a potential candidate.

Members of the Screen Actors Guild are allowed to vote on TV shows and films debuting in February. Golden Globes voters are eligible to choose films that will premiere in February, but they have agreed to approve only tv programs that will air in the calendar year 2020.
