Her parents immigrated to the United States when she was a child, and she grew up in Queens, New York. Ahmed attended New York University, where she studied film and television.
After graduation, Ahmed worked as a producer for MTV News. She then went on to produce and direct her own web series, “The Muslim American Experience.” The series follows the lives of Muslim Americans as they navigate their faith and identity in a post–9/11 world.

In 2009, she co–founded Mavin, a digital media company that creates and distributes content for South Asian millennials. Mavin has raised $35 million in funding and is now one of the largest digital media companies in the world, with a reach of over 150 million people.
