Mars is a film based on the song “Yungblud” by Yungblud, which was inspired by a teenage fan that the British singer encountered while on tour. The film took place in Northern England and was filmed in Blackpool.
In addition to Cat Marshall and Stefan Demetriou, Yungblud, whose actual name is Dominic Harrison, is also involved in the album’s production. Although the singer has dabbled in acting before, most notably in the Disney Channel musical drama The Lodge and in an episode of the ITV soap opera Emmerdale, this will be his first time appearing in a film of his creation.
The acquisition of Finney was a masterstroke. She rose to prominence playing the role of 18-year-old transgender student Elle Argent in the critically acclaimed romantic comedy Heartstopper, which was released on Netflix. She will soon be appearing on Doctor Who alongside Sex Education actor Ncuti Gatwa.
“Yasmin is a remarkable performer,” observed Rubinstein. “Just by looking at her, you can get the gist of anything she’s going through. She brought so much more to the table in addition to really inhabiting the role of Charlie, which she did so well.
Yungblud has said in the past that Mars is a representation of how his artwork “makes people feel like they can be unquestionably themselves, whomever they are – and with this project, we’re putting that message up to 11.” The production company made a public commitment to recruiting transgender, non-binary, and LGBTQ community members for on-screen and behind-the-scenes roles.
