The Plot of Surface Season 1
The surface appears to be a traditional psychological mystery thriller in which the lead character must learn the truth and learn about her missing history. It’s a woman’s frantic attempt to rebuild her life.
After Sophie recovers from her suicide attempt, she loses all memory of her history, including the events leading up to her ocean leap. Sophie tries everything to remember her past—from regression therapy to self-examination—but nothing seems to make sense.
She finds it increasingly uncomfortable the more she tries to recall. She needs to start over in life, but it all feels too strange and fresh. She also develops doubts regarding the details and circumstances that lead up to the suicide.
Trusting the people in her life, such as her friends and therapist, is difficult for Sophie. Sophie’s intuition tells her differently even though everyone around her appears to be genuinely worried for her and doing their best to assist her.
And that is the central theme of Surface’s story: what you believe you know is not always true. There could be more to Sophie than she is aware of or understands, or it can just be a case of simple deceit or a group plot by Sophie’s pals. We are eager to learn the results, though, regardless of the methodology.
Who Else Is Starring?
Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who has been in The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Wilderness, plays James, Sophie’s husband, in Surface.
The cast is completed by Millie Brady (The Last Kingdom), François Arnaud (Blindspot), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Broadchurch and Blindspot), Ari Graynor (Bad Teacher), and Stephan James (Selma).
