The novel The Flight Portfolio by Julie Orringer, which is inspired by the true story of the Emergency Rescue Committee, served as the inspiration for the plot of this series.
This takes place in the midst of World War II in the year 1940 when Varian Fry flies to Marseille with approximately three thousand dollars and a list of artists and writers he wishes to assist in their escape.
He stayed there for more than a year instead of just going there for a few weeks.
He has organized refugee journeys to safer ports around Spain and Portugal, gathered emergency finances, and faked documentation.
