The Pale Blue Eye on Netflix is an adaptation of Louis Bayard’s same-titled book from 2006. The novel, which includes a young Edgar Allan Poe, was listed as a contender for the 2007 Edgar Award for Best Novel.

It goes without saying that Edgar Allan Poe is honored with the Edgar Award. The discovery of a young cadet’s body swinging from a rope just outside the parade grounds disturbs the peace of an October evening at West Point Academy in 1830.

An apparent suicide is not unprecedented in a demanding environment like West Point, but the next day, an even deeper horror emerges. The body’s heart was taken after someone broke into the room where it was lying.

The Academy is at a loss for explanations and is desperate to avoid any unfavorable press, so they seek the assistance of a local civilian named Augustus Landor. Landor was formerly a police investigator in New York City and gained some notoriety during his time there before retiring to the Hudson Highlands for his wellness.

Landor, who is now a widower and growing increasingly restless in his isolation, agrees to take on the case.

As he investigates the deceased man’s friends and acquaintances, he discovers an eager assistant in the form of a sulky, interesting young cadet who has a propensity for drinking, two volumes of poetry to his name, and a cloudy history that differs depending on who is telling the story. The name of the cadet was Edgar Allan Poe.
