The events of ‘House of the Dragon‘ are set nearly two hundred years before the plot of ‘Game of Thrones. It chronicles the infamous civil war of the Targaryen family, known as Dance of the Dragons, which led to the demise of the house.

When the series begins the house is at the height of its power, but inside its veins, a dangerous poison has started moving slowly. King Viserys I Targaryen has begun to be the victim of his declining health and his decisions as well as considerations are hugely influenced by his hand Otto Hightower.

After the death of the king’s first wife who left him without a son, Otto leads his daughter Alicent to spend time with the mourning king concluding their inevitable marriage.

But when Alicent gives birth to sons, questions begin to arise around the indisputability of the declared heir- Rhaenyra, the king’s firstborn child and daughter who also happens to be Alicent’s childhood best friend.

In this situation power play among the important houses of Westeros becomes obvious as they try to decide whom to support to gain their own interest. House Velaryon also has to decide its stand under the leadership of the formidable seafarer Lord Corlys Velaryon.

Corlys is first introduced in the series at the Small Council of King Viserys I. He is portrayed as a serious man always vigilant about the little concerns emerging in the kingdom even when the King is not aware of them.

He is also presented as a largely ambitious man who, while trying to lift his wife to the right of which she was deprived, wants to rise to the ladder of power himself. For his famous seafaring and his powerful fleet, he is known as “the Sea Snake” in Westeros.
