David Tennant Returns for Doctor Who Season 14.

The Doctor has arrived! Make that Doctors, as Doctor Who season 14 seems to be bursting at the seams with new and old characters, including former star David Tennant.

Jodie Whittaker’s term as the time-traveling hero (which she took over from Peter Capaldi in 2018) will conclude in October 2022, according to the long-running BBC America drama. She and showrunner Chris Chibnall will depart Doctor Who simultaneously in season 14, making room for a new cast and a returning showrunner.

Ncuti Gatwa, star of Sex Education, has been named as the Doctor’s 14th incarnation. The 29-year-old is just a few years older than Matt Smith, who, at the age of 26, became the youngest actor to ever play the Time Lord.

Russell T. Davies, who oversaw the show’s relaunch in 2005 and left with Tennant in 2010, will return as showrunner. “Ncuti charmed us, snatched the Doctor, and possessed the TARDIS keys in seconds,” Davies said in a statement released in May 2022, when Gatwa was revealed as the next Doctor. “It’s an honor and fun to work with him; I can’t wait to get started.”

However, the author remained tight-lipped about any other specifics. “I can’t wait to tell you about them, but it’s just not fair,” he said following the news to RadioTimes. “Jodie is present. She owns it, she has a huge finale in October, and if we start nibbling – we have to reveal today because people will find out about Ncuti whether we want it or not, that’s Doctor Who’s curse.”

Though Davies wants viewers to concentrate on Whittaker’s “beyond epic” climax, the BBC had to publicize Tennant’s reappearance as well to prevent anyone from ruining the surprise. From 2005 through 2010, the Good Omens star piloted the TARDIS (the Doctor’s time-traveling spacecraft).

He returned in 2013 for the 50th-anniversary special, dubbed “The Day of the Doctor,” and he’ll return again to mark the 60th anniversary of the legendary British program. This time, the Scottish actor will work alongside Catherine Tate, who portrayed Donna Noble’s partner in the fourth season.

“They’ve returned!” Davies anticipated the announcement in May 2022. “And it seems to be impossible – first, we unveil a new Doctor, then an old Doctor, and then the magnificent Donna, what on earth is going on?” Perhaps this is a lost narrative. Or a parallel universe. Or it might be a dream, a prank, or a flashback. The only thing I can guarantee is that it will be magnificent, as two of our greatest stars return for a once-in-a-lifetime duel.”
