Photo Highlights from the Black Adam Set The Dramatic Scale of the Film

Black Adam Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson teases the huge scope of the long-awaited DC Extended Universe project with a new shot from the set of Black Adam. Johnson’s titular antihero, a former slave from Kahndaq who was given abilities by the wizard Shazam, will star in the next film in the franchise.

He becomes the archenemy of the superhero Shazam, who is the wizard Shazam’s new champion, after being imprisoned for 5,000 years for misusing those powers. Prior to the start of the DCEU, the project had been stuck in development purgatory for over two decades.

Johnson first expressed interest in playing the character in 2007, but it wasn’t until late 2014 that he was officially confirmed to feature in Black Adam. After working with director Jaume Collet-Serra on Disney’s Jungle Cruise, Johnson suggested him for the job, and Warner Bros. and New Line rushed the project to completion. The team eventually began filming in early April with Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Sarah Shahi as Adrianna Tomaz, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate and is almost completed.

The Rock took to Instagram to share a new shot from the set of Black Adam as the film approaches its last week of production. Johnson hinted at the huge scope of the film’s production and the damage his character would bring, including a fresh glimpse of his still-unreleased super suit.

Given that Black Adam is one of DC Comics’ most powerful characters, large-scale production is required simply to stay authentic to the antihero. However, when the picture is headed by a performer of The Rock’s size and renown, and the filmmaker relies more heavily on real effects than the DCEU’s early, poorly-received, CGI-heavy episodes, the production design crew must think big in scale.

Johnson has given fans a behind-the-scenes look at Black Adam’s huge sets before, and his behind-the-scenes revelations are intriguing for those who have waited over a decade to watch the actor take on the role.

The immense damage on exhibit in the photograph is just as fascinating as the grandeur of the staged photo. The Black Adam set images to appear to indicate a healthy balance in bringing the character to the DCEU, with both Johnson and Collet-Serra confirming the film would explore his darker side as much as his heroic side. Fans may expect a teaser or video from the film in the near future since DC FanDome is slated to return later this year and filming is due to conclude this week.
