The Wonder Florence Pugh’s Period Drama

Sebastián Lelio has directed the upcoming film ‘The Wonder’ starring Academy Award nominee Florence Pugh. Irish-Canadian novelist Emma Donoghue, British playwright Alice Birch, and Lelio have written the screenplay for the film which is based on Donoghue’s same-named novel.

The story is set in the year 1862 in a rural village and revolves around a woman named Lib Wright. Wright is a nurse and is sent to the village to observe a young girl. The reason for this special observation is that the girl has not eaten for several months.

Pugh is a brilliant English actress who rose to fame at a young age due to her amazing acting skill and won a number of prestigious accolades. Her film debut was in the role of Abbie Mortimer in the 2014 British mystery drama ‘The Falling’.

The next film she starred in is ‘Lady Macbeth’ where she played the lead role of Katherine Lester. In the 2018 historical action movie, ‘Outlaw King’ Pugh starred as Elizabeth de Burgh.

Her next lead role was in the British horror movie ‘Malevolent’ where she portrayed Angela Sayers in 2018.

Pugh portrayed the real-life English professional wrestler Paige in the biographical sports comedy ‘Fighting with My Family’ in 2019 in which she co-starred with Lena Headey, Dwayne Johnson,  and Jack Lowden.

The same year she also starred in the folk horror film ‘Midsommar’ as the main character Dani Ardor. In 2019 Pugh was cast in the last film which gave her the Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

She played Amy March in the same named film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s renowned coming-of-age novel ‘Little Women. In 2021 Pugh was cast in the role of Yelena Belova aka Black Widow co-starring with Scarlett Johansson.

Her last film since ‘The Wonder’ is the psychological thriller ‘Don’t Worry Darling‘ (2022) in which she co-starred with Harry Styles in the role of Alice Chambers. Pugh also acted in the British miniseries ‘The Little Drummer Girl and the MCU miniseries ‘Hawkeye‘.

The character of Kitty in the series is played by Irish actress Niamh Algar. She won accolades for roles such as Dinah (‘The Virtues’) and Ursula (‘Calm with Horses). Algar played the role of Olivia in the 2016 eco-horror movie of Lorcan Finnegan’s Without Name’ which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Then in 2019, she starred as Ursula in the Irish crime drama ‘Calm with Horses’ and won a nomination for BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Her next role was in the 2019 comedy-drama ‘The Last Right’ where she was cast in the main role of Mary Sullivan.

In 2021 Algar played Enid Baines in the psychological horror movie ‘Censor’ and the same year she also played Dana Curtis in the heist action thriller movie ‘Wrath of Man’.

Netflix released an official trailer for the upcoming movie The Wonder on October 4, 2022. The movie premiered worldwide at Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2023, and is set to release on Netflix on November 16 this year.
