Jack Move Review: Battles, Story, Features, and More

Published by

Fights in Jack Move are artistically animated turn-based battles. Inspired by classic JRPGs like Final Fantasy 7-10, Grandia, and Golden Sun, but with a modern twist.

Aside from its acceptable duration, Jack Move’s other strong suit is its engaging fighting system. While most of the game occurs in Noa’s village, combat takes place over the shoulder in a Tron-like virtual reality for some spectacular ‘cyber clashes.’

Unfortunately, I believe Noa’s enemies are attempting to hack her brain (the game never explains itself very well on this front), as you never see most of them in the environment around you. Instead, Noa’s Yu-Gi-Oh-style cyberspace deck contains a threat level meter that, when complete, implies foes can attack you at any time.

Battles may be lively and tactical thanks to the single-party member system. Customize your Cyber Deck’s software to switch roles in the middle of combat, balancing offensive, defense, and bonuses.

The secret to winning is choosing which program to load during combat! Hardware upgrades can help you improve your stats, expand the amount of software you can install, or offer Noa new powers.

Jack Move Story:

Rock Paper Shotgun

Solares is her title on the streets. Noa Solares, a mystery veteran of the Data Wars, keeps the struggle against the Corporations going as a criminal hacker-for-hire, empowering the oppressed and weakening those in power.

Noa is thrown into a world of killing, kidnapping, dark investigations, and the corporation that would steal it for their ends when she receives a warning message from her estranged father, the eccentric Dr. Abner Solares, whose wife’s death inspired him to become the leading researcher of ‘digital reanimation.’

What begins as a quest to save your father will evolve into a battle for humanity’s destiny.

It’s a pity Jack Move doesn’t make more use of its RAM swaps, but it’s acceptable considering the studio’s size and breadth. Over the years, chief developer Edd Parris has worked primarily on his own, and what’s here is still a remarkable feat considering its high degree of polish.

I hope So Romantically can expand on these concepts in the future since Jack Move seems like the beginning of something unique – and certainly a cut above many of the other Japanese-style RPG pretenders I’ve experienced.
