Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio: release date, plot, cast, and more!

Guillermo del Toro is an expert at telling unbelievable stories. In films like Pan’s Labyrinth, Crimson Peak, and The Shape of Water, he brought magical realism to life, earning him Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director. However, his mentality appears inclined to dark fairy tales, making him the ideal fit to take on Pinocchio. And he’s already moving in that direction.

With this exclusive trailer, Guillermo Del Toro brought audiences behind the film’s incredible craftwork for Netflix’s TUDUM event in September 2022. Naturally, seeing this art form come to life increases our want to see this film.

The Plot of Pinocchio

Many consider Pinocchio to be a timeless children’s tale. The Adventures of Pinocchio is an Italian book by Carlo Collodi in 1883. Since its publication, the tale has seen several stage and film adaptations, perhaps best known for Disney’s legendary 1940 animated musical adaptation.

In 2008, Guillermo Del Toro, whose movies are renowned for combining aspects of horror with fairy tales, said that he was working on a “darker” Pinocchio version. No one character in history has had as deep a personal connection to me as Pinocchio, he claimed, adding that he has wanted to make this movie for as long as he can remember. He referred to it as his passion project.

A wooden marionette puppet that comes to life in the 1930s Fascist Italy dreams of becoming a real boy. Geppetto, his impoverished father, and a woodcarver sees Pinocchio as a replacement for his infant child, who died tragically. However, as he explores his surroundings, Pinocchio gets into difficulty because he is naughty and disobedient.

Since this adaptation has been described as a dark and twisted vision of the story, it’s hard to say how big of a departure from the text or the Disney version it will make.

The Cast Member

IMDb

The Pinocchio cast is fantastic, in my opinion. Gregory Mann, a newcomer, portrays Pinocchio, with David Bradley playing Geppetto and Ewan McGregor as Jiminy Cricket (billed for this production just as Cricket).

Tilda Swinton will play the Turquoise Fairy. Along with Cate Blanchett and Burn Gorman, the film will include Christoph Waltz, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, and Finn Wolfhard.

Since 2008, there have been many ups and downs in the creation and development of Pinocchio, but it is now finally available for audiences to witness. If you’re impatient, you may wish time away by making a wish upon a star because the release is still a few months away.
