Charlbi Dean passed away at the age of 32.

Charlbi Dean, a South African actress and model presently acting in the festival circuit smash Triangle of Sadness, passed away on Monday at a hospital in New York City at the age of 32 due to an unexpected illness, as reported by Variety on Tuesday. Charlbi Dean was a model as well.

This past May, at the Cannes Film Festival, the film Triangle of Sadness was honored with the Palme d’Or for best picture. The up-and-coming actor played a co-starring part in the movie.

The satirical dark comedy written and directed by Swedish filmmaker Ruben Ostlund, whose previous works include Force Majeure and The Square, will soon be released in theatres in the United States and the United Kingdom in October. Woody Harrelson and Harris Dickinson star in the film.

Dean portrayed the role of Yaya, one half of a model couple alongside Dickinson, that is invited on board a luxury boat for the ultra-rich before things go wrong. Dickinson played the other half of the duo. This year, the movie will also have showings at the film festivals in Toronto and New York City.

Ruben Ostlund Paid an Emotional Tribute to Charlbi Dean.

On Tuesday, Ostlund paid an emotional homage to Dean by posting an online article in which he referred to her passing as “a shock and a tragedy.” Along with an image of Dean working on set, he posted it on Instagram with the caption, “It is an honor to have gotten to know and work with her.”

“Charlbi possessed a caring and compassion that elevated the spirits of her coworkers and the whole film team. Realizing that Mom will not be at our side in the coming years makes me feel a profound loss.

As Charli Dean Kriek, Dean was born in Cape Town and reared there. At the age of 12, she registered with a modeling agency, and at the age of 12, she made her debut on screen in the South African film Spud, which starred Troye Sivan. Her role as Syonide, a recurrent character on the CW series Black Lightning, which began airing in 2018, is perhaps what brought her the most attention.
