Netflix’s space-themed workplace comedy Space Force Season 3 has been canceled after two seasons.
Greg Daniels and Steve Carell, the latter one of the lead cast members, created this series for Netflix that is inspired by the decision of the Trump administration of creating a space force.
The plot of the series revolves around the United States Armed Forces’ sixth branch called United States Space Force and the people who establish the branch.
In the first season, we were introduced to General Mark Naird and his team who are undergoing the effort of reaching the moon as per the order of the president.

Where has Space Force Season 2 left us at the end of the season?
The second season ended with a cliffhanger. We were introduced to General Mark R. Naird’s other team members Dr. Adrian Mallory, F. Tony Scarapiducci, Captain Angela Ali, Dr. Chan Kaifang, etc.
Near the end of the second season, they found a large asteroid coming to Earth. But now the show is canceled we will never get to know how the team would have dealt with the potential apocalypse.
Also, in season two we got to see Captain Angela Ali and Dr. Chan Kaifang developing a romantic bonding that will now remain further undiscovered. If a season 3 were made, we would have been able to delve a bit more into Naird’s daughter Erin’s life after graduation.
There is a chance we also could get to know about the reason why his soon-to-be ex-wife Maggie was imprisoned. Naird himself, who has recently learned to balance a personal and professional life, will remain unable of sharing more of his life.
And last but not the least, astronaut Captain Lancaster whose mission got abandoned en route to a place between Earth and Mars, will now have to remain in space forever as no more season is left for him to try to get back on Earth.
‘Space Force’ was first announced with the first season consisting of ten episodes on January 16, 2019. The first season was released on Netflix on May 29, 2020. A second season was renewed on November 13, 2020, which aired on February 18, 2022.
It is presumed that the primary cast members would have returned for the next season if the series was not canceled.
General Mark R. Naird is portrayed by American actor-comedian Steve Carell, mostly renowned for his role in ‘The Office.
Other cast members include Primetime Emmy winner and Academic Awards nominee John Malkovich, ‘Parks and Recreation famed Benjamin Schwartz, ‘Silicon Valley and ‘Love Hard’ cast member Jimmy O. Yang, ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S.’ star Lisa Kudrow, etc.

But despite having a number of talented actors and actresses, the series got canceled after two seasons on April 29, 2022.
Netflix has stated its usual reason behind canceling shows in this case too which is less than enough viewership to justify the production budget. It is known that the second season was produced in Vancouver in order to lower the budget of the show which hints at the budget problem of Netflix as a contributing factor even since the second season.
The showrunners even brought Ken Kwapis, the veteran comedy director, to refocus the tone of the series. Despite all these efforts, Netflix canceled the series.
Season one of the series did not score well on the critics’ scale with Rotten Tomatoes having only a 39% score.
Though it managed to gain a 75% audience score. In the season, the showrunners focused on the relationship of the team members which proved to be a good strategy as in season two critic score raised to 100% on the day when it aired.
But the show never recovered from the failure of the first season which compelled a number of viewers to turn away from the series. As a result, the second season did not last longer than one week in any region in the world as one of Netflix’s top 10 series.
Another contributing factor behind the show’s cancellation is Netflix’s recent budget cuts. At the beginning of 2022, a large number of subscribers dismissed the streaming service.
This and along with some other losses resulted in the removal of $1.1 billion of funding from the biggest investors of Netflix. Some series must be canceled for this reason. There is no doubt that ‘Space Force’ falls under the list too.
Cast member Ben Schwartz, after the cancellation of the show, being the representative of all the cast members, has shared his gratitude towards the audience, the showrunners, the writers, and his fellow cast members.
