Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Updates: Fans of Star Trek: Discovery will be pleased to learn that the series has already been renewed for a fifth season, which will premiere next month. Even once Season 4 concludes, Captain Michael Burnham’s (Sonequa Martin-Green) voyage through the galaxy will be far from over. Meanwhile, fresh episodes of Discovery’s fourth season will premiere on Thursday, February 10th.
After taking leadership of the ship in Season 3’s finale, Michael Burnham was ultimately given the captain’s chair in Season 4. New problems have developed, however, as the crew of the USS Discovery must deal with a gravitational anomaly that threatens both Federation and non-Federation worlds.
Season 4 went on hiatus on December 30, having viewers wait more than a month to find out whether the anomaly had been erased or not. Even still, the wait will almost certainly be worthwhile, as Season 4’s danger prompted questions about the Federation’s ultimate mission and whether leaders should use violence as a deterrent when dealing with unknown threats.
This type of ethical debate has always been at the heart of the Star Trek franchise, and if Discovery continues to raise similar issues, the show may be renewed for many more seasons.
Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Renewal Status
Discovery’s early popularity secured the show’s continued existence and ushered in a new era of interconnected productions. Originally set 10 years before the original 1960s Star Trek — which featured Spock, Kirk, and the USS Enterprise.
Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy, as well as the launch of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, continue the new generation of Star Trek programs. A Starfleet Academy and a Section 31 series are now in development, taking the franchise in new and exciting ways.
Discovery and Picard are two of Paramount’s most popular original shows, indicating that the streaming service is heavily reliant on the Star Trek property to lure new subscribers. It’s no surprise, then, that Star Trek: Discovery has already received a fifth season renewal.
Season 4 of Discovery welcomes back long-serving cast members Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, and Doug Jones, as well as Season 3 newcomers David Ajala, Blu del Barrio, and Ian Alexander.
