Hannah is followed in The Last Thing He Told Me after her husband Owen vanishes just as he is being looked into for embezzlement. He requests Hannah to keep Bailey, her adolescent stepdaughter, safe in a note.

In addition, Owen left a duffel bag with $600,000, which Bailey finds. Hannah discovers Owen lies about his identity as the FBI looks into his absence. Bailey begins to hazily recall her and Owen’s life in Austin, Texas.

Hannah and Bailey take a plane from California to Texas to conduct their investigation, starting with an ex-professor of Owen’s.

The professor directs Hannah and Bailey to a pub owned by someone who is Bailey’s biological uncle by showing them pictures of Owen’s former pals. Charlie, the proprietor of the pub, calls Bailey “Kristin.”

Hannah learns via more investigation that Nicolas, Bailey’s grandpa, is part of a criminal organization. Additionally, she discovers that Kate, Bailey’s mother, was slain due to joining the gang.

Owen’s real name is Ethan, and after Owen testified against his father in vengeance for the murder of his wife, he and Bailey intended to go into Witness Protection. However, a program leak made Owen suspicious, so he and Bailey fled into hiding independently.

Hannah and Bailey share a hotel room; when Bailey leaves, Hannah phones the U.S. Marshals to help locate her.

The option to enter Witness Protection apart from Owen, whose cover is now useless, is given to Hannah and Bailey. Hannah urges Charlie to connect her with Nicolas before she commits. In return for Nicolas’s hazy connection with his granddaughter, Hannah fights for Bailey’s protection.

Hannah and Bailey get back together, and Hannah finds out that Owen phoned her using a unique app on his phone. He just had about 20 seconds to inform her that he was leaving her life.

Hannah and Bailey leave Witness Protection and head back to California. After a while, Hannah runs into a stranger as she prepares for an art display.

Hannah recognizes Owen despite his altered look, and he immediately leaves as Bailey and her boyfriend show up there.
