More About the Series

When the series was first announced, Kurtzman had an estimate that it would take around one year to do the animation work for each season.

The Hageman’s stated that they wished to achieve an “epic” scope without compromising the personalities and passion during their early discussions with Hibon when he first joined the project.

Hibon thought that using computer-generated animation would provide the production with all the resources they needed to create a cinematic series that was equal to the live-action episodes in the franchise.

The use of CG animation set Prodigy apart from the Lower Decks and Star Trek: The Animated Series, the two prior Star Trek animated series.

The design aesthetic of the series was initially produced using 2D sketches before being animated with 3D CG animation. Kurtzman likened the series to the animated anthology series Love, Death & Robots in terms of “beauty and lighting and cinema.”

In order to include more of the “classic language” of Star Trek designs into Prodigy as the main characters get closer to the Federation and Starfleet, the series’ creators made an effort to make the beginning designs feel more grounded than those of earlier Star Trek shows.
