Sam McCarthy was an Irish–American politician who served as a United States Senator from Idaho from 1911 to 1917. A staunch opponent of American involvement in World War I, McCarthy was one of the most vocal critics of President Woodrow Wilson‘s foreign policy.
Born in County Cork, Ireland, McCarthy immigrated to the United States with his family in 1873. The family settled in Boston, Massachusetts, where McCarthy attended public schools. He then worked as a clerk in a Boston mercantile firm before moving to Idaho in 1884.
In Idaho, McCarthy worked as a rancher and miner. He also became involved in politics, serving as a member of the Idaho Territorial Legislature from 1893 to 1895. In 1911, he was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican. During his time in the Senate, McCarthy was a leading critic of Wilson‘s foreign policy.
He was especially opposed to American involvement in World War I, which he believed was a European conflict that did not concern the United States. McCarthy‘s opposition to the war led to his defeat in the 1916 Senate election. After leaving the Senate, McCarthy returned to Idaho, where he continued to work as a rancher and miner. He died in Coeur d‘Alene, Idaho, in 1935.
