Unless you do not really recall or are unfamiliar with the Australian adolescent melodrama Heartbreak High from the 1990s, prepare yourself to get fascinated. Some of you have done it before.

The popular show, which released over 200 episodes between 1994 to 1999, was the ideal coming-of-age show for youngsters who (literally) did grow up in the pre-millennium era, and it tackled a range of extremely significant issues such as substance use, teenage pregnancy, and sexuality. Does anyone hear euphoria bells?

Although it was a bit soon for the Gen Z crowd, Netflix has now revealed a relaunch of the series, which is guaranteed to appeal to both old and new fans. Showcasing a diverse group of up-and-coming performers and poised to break new ground in storytelling,

Um, absolutely. On August 1st, Netflix released the very first glimpse at the much-awaited Australian adaptation. This will appeal to both fashion and euphoria enthusiasts. The Gen Z cast is decked up in Y2K fashion – we believe Maddy would approve.

Hartley High, the former high school in which the series was situated, will be the setting for the new season.

Whereas the original cast graduated a really long time ago, the relaunch will follow a fresh group of teenagers at the Sydney school.

Amerie, for example, becomes an outsider after making a big revelation and falling out with her best friend Harper. She later befriends two outsiders, Quinni and Darren, while also navigating the typical path of being a teen and all the turmoil that follows it.

According to the official summary on IMDb, a new look at Hartley High after 20 years.  Amerie must rehabilitate her image with the help of her new mates, outsiders Quinni and Darren, whilst juggling love, sex, and heartache.

Ayesha Madon, the main lead will portray Amerie. Other young Australian artists in the ensemble include James Majoos, who portrays Darren, Chloe Hayden, who plays Quinni, and Asher Yasbincek, who portrays Amerie’s former BFF, Harper.

Will McDonald plays Ca$h, a drug dealer turned food delivery guy.  Thomas Weatherall, who portrays the part of Malaki, an athlete, is another rising star.

Filming began in Sydney in November 2021, and it was revealed at the time that 8 episodes were in the works.

If it is a success, a second chapter will almost certainly be announced. Let’s hope so!
