Design
The Chromebook Flip C434 could easily be confused with one of Asus’ more expensive ZenBook Ultrabooks. However, I can’t think of another laptop in this price range that looks as elegant as the Flip C434 with its matte-silver aluminum finish and chrome trim. It has a clean, no-nonsense appearance and folds up to a nearly symmetrical slab of metal.
Overall, the Asus Chromebook Flip C302 follows in every other unibody MacBook Pro-inspired laptop released in recent years. The straight edges, rounded corners, and 0.9-inch slim frame, on the other hand, add up to a smart design that competes with HP and Google’s more premium models but at a much lower price.
Display
The 14-inch, 1920 x 1080 display has a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is great for widescreen videos but not as good for viewing longer webpages and documents as a 16:10 aspect ratio – we prefer the latter overall, but it’s a personal preference.
Around the side of the touchscreen are some pleasingly thin bezels and a webcam at the top. As the Flip in the Chromebook’s name suggests, the display can be folded right over the back against the keyboard – you can use this laptop trussed in tent mode or even deploy it as a makeshift tablet.
Performance
Of course, you don’t need particularly powerful specs to run Chrome OS – it’s one of the reasons Chromebooks are so appealing and affordable – but that’s definitely at the lower end of the range when it comes to the sum of power you can get in a Chromebook, and very much directed at those who’d rather save money than get high-end internal components that Chrome OS might never get to test anyway fully.
In terms of storage, depending on the model, the Flip C434 comes with a 64GB or 128GB eMMC SSD. However, you also get a temporary 100GB cloud storage space and an SD card slot, making it much easier to store more files.
Battery Life
Regarding battery life, the Asus Chromebook Flip C434 lasts at least 8 or 9 hours of general use in our testing, so you’ll be fine for a day away from home or office. In addition, the Flip C434 outlasted its predecessors by more than an hour, lasting 9 hours and 58 minutes on our Laptop Mag battery test.
With 10 hours of battery life confirmed by the battery test, you have nearly all-day battery power to get you through most of your activities without the need to charge.
