Will Smith Starrer Bright 2 is No Longer in Development?

Bright 2 has been announced following the release of the first film to be released in 2017. It is now 5 years later, and it is now reported that another poem has been deleted since the Will Smith incident. The movie has had many revisions over the years so here’s what we know so far about Bright 2.

Released on December 22, 2017, Bright was a major new legend starring Joel Edgerton and Will Smith. The film is set in another Los Angeles area where people live near orcs and other mythical creatures.

At the time of release, Netflix noted that it was one of the largest films ever released. The film was released significantly before Netflix reported its own 2-minute stats or hourly stats, so, we’re not sure how Bright stacks it all these years later.

It was later reported that 60 million Netflix users were watching the film, although it was not immediately clear. On January 3, 2018 Netflix confirmed that the sequel would officially return called Bright 2 (confirmation text below also featured funny names like Brighter, Bad Boys in Mordor, Orcs Gone Wild and Wand Wars).

TIMELINE of Bright 2:

Well, by 2020, very little was happening because of COVID-19 which prevented production from continuing which seemed to have led to rethinking around the text. That was confirmed in May 2020 when the deadline revealed that David Ayer would no longer be directing the film and that Louis Leterrier was keenly interested in the role of directors.

And in July 2021, Production Weekly stated that filming (or production in some way at least) was to continue in the fall of 2021. We were not sure what was going on. Another addition to the production list was that T.S. Nowlin, a participant in Netflix’s The Adam Project, was on the writing team.

Nowlin is also known for his involvement in the Maze Runner film franchise. In the fall of 2021, Netflix released the anime spin-off Bright: Samurai Soul which was released in October 2021 without fans. The movie failed to reach Netflix’s top 10 in any region and has only 5.5 on IMDb.

Many fear that the project may be suspended or set on fire following a series of Will Smith projects that have been canceled or suspended. They are suspended due to Smith’s action at the Oscars in which he slapped Chris Rock who told a joke abusing his wife. After the Oscars, IndieWire reported that Smith was still on board to play his role in the follow-up.

By April 2022, however, all hopes were dashed. Bloomberg reported that Will Smith’s National Geographic series Pole to Pole was delayed but did not mention Bright 2. Lucas Shaw, another Bloomberg correspondent, said on Twitter that the project had been quietly canceled: “Netflix also rejected plans to make Bright a sequel, but that has nothing to do with the incident.” Netflix has also suspended the development for another Smith project in the form of the upcoming film Fast and Loose. A Hollywood journalist first published the news. Council is still the only Will Smith project now on Netflix.
