Crossovers, Returning Characters, and the Season 21 Premiere Date for Law & Order: SVU

Law & Order’s Special Victims Unit returns! The mothership series, which has spawned a number of spinoffs and a massive TV universe, has been renewed for season 21 after being cancelled following season 20 in 2010.

Sam Waterston plays District Attorney Jack McCoy, and Anthony Anderson plays Det. Kevin Bernard in the reboot, which is led by executive producer and showrunner Rick Eid. Lt. Kate Dixon is played by Camryn Manheim, while ADA is played by Odelya Halevi. Hugh Dancy is ADA, Samantha Maroun is Nolan Price’s Manhattan unit, and Jeffrey Donovan is Det. Frank Cosgrove.

Returning characters, as well as probable crossovers with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Organized Crime, will all be featured in Season 21.

Same structure, new plot.

“The show is very much the same, same story structure and all,” Waterston told ET, referring to the show’s consistent format, in which each episode is split into two parts, the first following detectives as they investigate crimes and the second following legal proceedings as the lawyers bring the case to trial.

Unlike other spinoffs, which have experimented with episode design and material, Law & Order: SVU will stick to the show’s roots. Anderson stated, “That’s a testament to the show’s success.” Given that the show has been off the air for nearly a decade, the stories told this time will undoubtedly change.

“What we’re doing on the program is going to represent changes in society, changes in police work,” the actor said of the show’s upcoming episodes, which would focus on current events.

The show’s tendency to tell storylines based on current events will be another recurring theme. “I believe people are interested in seeing and being a part of those stories that are being told, as well as in being a part of history,” Anderson said, adding that the writers’ most difficult task is “how to choose from such a rich bank of stories.”

Even the season 21 premiere (“The Right Thing”), which examines a celebrity assassination, will conjure up thoughts of Bill Cosby, who was just released from prison after his sexual assault conviction was reversed.

“It became very clear very soon that they really stuck to that ripped from the headlines thing,” Dancy said of the new episodes, which he described as “extremely current.”
