Loki Head Writer Clears Up Multiverse Confusion

Loki Updates: Michael Waldron, the head writer of Disney+ Loki, cleared up the confusion revolving around the final episode of the show involving the concept of the multiverse.

The final episode of Loki saw the opening of the multiverse and set off the course of Phase 4 of the MCU. But there has been a lot of confusion revolving around the multiverse with fans having a lot of questions, which the show’s head writer Michael Waldron tried to clear in a recent interview.

Loki premiered in June 2021 and followed the God of Mischief after the events of Avengers: Endgame, where he was seen escaping with the Tesseract. The series catches up right after Loki’s escape and shows that he is caught by the Time Variance Authority, an organization responsible for safeguarding the sacred timeline.

In the initial episodes, Loki is seen befriending Agent Mobius and helping the TVA to find his evil variant who is at loose in the timeline.

The evil variant turns out to be Sylvie, who is more than what meets the eye. Over the course of six episodes, the series proves to be a rollercoaster ride with twists and turns at every corner. When TVA’s origins are unearthed and it is revealed that the Time-Keepers are actually a hoax, it ensues chaos as Loki and Sylvie set out to find the one who is responsible for the TVA and the sacred timeline.

In the sixth and final episode of season 1, the pair finally discover The One Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), who is responsible for setting up the TVA and the timeline. However, in the final few minutes of the episode, everything goes upside down as Sylvie kills The One Who Remains and unleashes the multiverse. This one act by Sylvie will change the future of the MCU.

However, fans have a lot of questions regarding the multiverse as time travel can be a very complex subject. In a recent interview with ScreenCrush, Loki’s head writer Michael Waldron cleared up some of the confusion pertaining to the Multiverse.

When he was asked why there are so many timelines and variants when the TVA is responsible for protecting the Sacred Timeline, Waldron provided a long explanation. He said that the writers had gone with the philosophy that Time is always happening, therefore, there are different instances of time occurring at once.

He explained that minute inflections in an instance make up different timelines. For instance, a little fluctuation in an instance of time will make up a whole different timeline.

Loki has set up the concept of the multiverse in the MCU and the concept will be further explored in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness where Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is set to make an appearance. The consequences of the unleashing of the Multiverse will be seen in all the MCU projects of Phase 4.

While the concept of time travel has always been a complex subject in films and shows, Loki is unique in itself as the villain, The One Who Remains is in control of the Sacred Timeline, and whose evil variants are set to cause havoc.

Even with Waldron’s explanation, fans will still have questions that will hopefully be cleared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The upcoming Disney+ animated series What If…? also deals with alternate realities and will probably provide some answers. Fans just have to wait for these upcoming MCU shows and movies to get an answer about the complexities of the Multiverse.
