Most superhero movies, according to James Gunn, are boring

Published by

Director James Gunn, who is directing the next DC picture The Suicide Squad, believes that superhero films are becoming increasingly uninteresting. Gunn has long been involved with superhero series, having directed Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, which introduced the world to that obscure bunch of heroes.

His interpretation of the cosmic Guardians catapulted the previously unknown group to fame, making them one of the MCU’s most successful, albeit unexpected, organizations. Gunn went on to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and executive produces Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, as well as Thor: Love and Thunder, which will be released later this year.

After being dismissed from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn also switched to the DCEU. Following Gunn’s discharge from that project, Warner Bros. contacted him and offered him the opportunity to helm a number of DCEU films. The director opted to helm the sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad right away, and his forthcoming hybrid sequel-reboot, which will hit theatres in August, is one of the most eagerly awaited DC films in a long time. Gunn will also release Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is set to begin filming later this year, in 2023.

Gunn is obviously well-versed in the realm of superhero flicks, and his most recent statements suggest he has some opinions on the genre’s present status. According to SFX Magazine, the filmmaker believes many of the recent superhero flicks to be dull. Gunn claims that he initially liked several of them, but that they have run out of ideas over time. He concedes that not all the movies are dull and that many are attempting new ideas, but Gunn makes no mention of any specific films in his remarks.

Many others have already echoed James Gunn thoughts.

Despite the director’s lack of specificity in naming studios or films, it’s apparent that he’s referring to the major two, DC and Marvel. The term “Marvel Formula” has become prevalent in many reviews since the latter has released many films each year over the previous decade or so. DC has been treated differently, if only because of the franchise’s chaotic status.

Despite this, MCU critics favor episodes and films that deviate from the so-called “standard,” such as WandaVision and Loki. Gunn, on the other hand, could be onto something.

Some of the most well-received superhero films in recent years, such as Thor: Ragnarok and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, have defied expectations. However, when these mega-corporations look to the future, it’s apparent that these evaluations have been taken into account.

The MCU will continue to inject newness into the franchise by bringing auteur directors like Chloé Zhao and Nia DaCosta onboard for upcoming sequels. Taika Waititi, the director of Ragnarok, is returning to direct Thor: Love and Thunder, and the MCU will continue to inject newness into the franchise by bringing auteur directors like Chloé Zhao and Nia DaCosta onboard for upcoming sequels.

The Suicide Squad, according to Gunn, will draw influence from a variety of sources, including vintage war pictures. Perhaps his remarks will spark a resurgence of sorts, with even more innovation infused into the genre, which has been a mainstay of the business in recent years.
