Benedict Cumberbatch Updates: Nobody can deny that Sherlock was Benedict Cumberbatch’s blockbuster role, with the worldwide phenomenon’s tremendous success propelling him into the spotlight and propelling him straight to Hollywood stardom.

Sherlock Holmes is A contemporary retelling of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s renowned stories. Sherlock Holmes lives in London in the twenty-first century, a city rife with mystery, murder, and deception.

Robbers, blackmailers, smugglers, and serial murderers prowl the back alleyways. When the police are at their wits’ end, they turn to Mr. Sherlock Holmes and his unusual techniques of the deduction for help. Sherlock seeks to solve some of the country’s most interesting riddles with the help of Doctor John Watson, a newly returning Afghanistan vet.

Martin Freeman has achieved well for himself outside of the equation, but in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the BBC’s Holmes and Watson re-teamed in a mega-budget box office hit the same year the second season of the hit mystery thriller was launched, albeit in very distinct contexts and at opposite ends of the character spectrum.

We Got This Covered

Freeman had rejected down Bilbo Baggins’ character due to schedule issues with Sherlock Holmes, but he and Cumberbatch both did end up in the troupe.

While the former may have played the lead and provided the narrative’s anchor, the latter didn’t even show up on-site, having donned a motion-capture bodysuit to provide his motions and vocals to Smaug the dragon and The Necromancer.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey may have made over a billion dollars at the box office, which was to be anticipated given Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-earth following his iconic Lord of the Rings trilogy, but the film’s slow pacing and unconvincing visual effects were heavily criticized.

However, while Freeman received widespread appreciation for his key role, Benedict Cumberbatch’s limited screen time was dramatically extended in the sequels The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies.

With an Amazon TV program and a Warner Bros. animated film in the pipeline, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has resurfaced as one of Netflix’s top 10 most-watched titles almost a decade later.
