Elizabeth Olsen remembers her “awful” Game of Thrones audition

Elizabeth Olsen Updates: Elizabeth Olsen is now a genre fiction superstar, but she missed out on one of geek culture’s most important roles long before she became Wanda Maximoff.

Olsen discussed her audition for the role of Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones in a new appearance on the Awards Chatter podcast this week. Fans will have to believe her when she claims it was “terrible.”

Olsen said that she had a humiliating audition for Game of Thrones before the show became a global hit. She remembered: “I tried out for Game of Thrones. In a tiny room in New York, I auditioned for the assistant to the casting director, with just a camera on me and them reading the script. When she came out of the flames, I was giving the Khaleesi speech. It was dreadful. I did not receive a callback.”

Olsen can now chuckle about the situation since Emilia Clarke ended up becoming the perfect Khaleesi, and Olsen has had her own triumphs. She also accepts failure with grace, stating that she “loves the jitters of an audition” and admitting that not every actor is suited to every role.

“Auditions have always been something I’ve liked doing. I know other performers hate auditions… In an audition, you are your own worst adversary. You’re either prepared or you’re not, and nothing is in your hands after that “She stated. “So it’s sort of great to have this safe zone where you can do anything you want with this part.”

Following the interview, numerous fans on social media expressed satisfaction that Olsen did not get the part. Some believed Clarke was too ideal for the part, while others wanted to spare Olsen the disappointment of the show’s finale, as well as the rumored problems with working with Game of Thrones’ famed showrunners.

Olsen previously discussed her audition for the role of Daenerys Targaryen when the Game of Thrones finale aired in 2019. She told Vulture at the time: “It was the most uncomfortable audition I’d ever had. She had just burnt. And she’s giving a speech in front of thousands of people about how she’s their queen. They weren’t sure if they wanted a British accent or not. So you did it in both cases. It was dreadful. Whenever someone says, “Bad audition tale.” That’s the one I recall.”

Olsen may be seen in Marvel Studio’s WandaVision on Disney+, which offers a free trial for new subscribers. Game of Thrones is still available to watch on HBO Max.
