The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 Updates: “My name is June Osborne. I am a citizen of the United States and I seek asylum in the country of Canada.” These words are not just a part of some dream or hallucination. The woman formerly known as Offred has actually done it, she did escape Gilead.

The Handmaid’s Tale has subjected June and viewers alike to a seemingly never-ending cycle of pain and despair. Even Madeline Brewer, who plays the role of Janine, admitted that watching The Handmaid’s Tale is “a big ask”.

With the arrival of season four, it looked as if it was to follow the similar path of the same traumatic plots and theme over again. With just itched the idea of freedom for June than snatching it away seemingly in the very last moments every time.

Thankfully, after June frustrated the viewers by refusing to escape at the end of season two, everyone’s favorite handmaid has finally escaped the vicious cycle, thereby ending the show’s repetitive portray of agony and pain. Except, of course then again, June is not free just yet.

Even after she is united with her husband Luke, June still suffers. “I can’t believe you’re here”, he says and neither June could believe it.

Unable to cope with Luke’s concern and overbearing desire to set things right, June hides in the bathroom, where she looks back at the horrors she has faced and the torture she endured particularly the one in episode three. June does emerge from the bathroom, wearing a bright red dressing gown.

It’s not just Gilead’s trauma that June carries with her. It’s also guilt “Do you guys ever wonder if you deserve this, deserve to be here”? She asks, but June’s fellow survivors are quick to calm her down, “It’s an Aunt Lydia free-zone”, but still it is not a Gilead free-zone still.

It felt like a part of Gilead had remained in Gilead, Then comes the confrontation of Serena which was a step towards the right direction, both for June and the show, after the dreaded three years of Mrs. Waterfords abuse it was only right that viewers were awarded in the seasons to come and boy oh boy they delivered.

In a late-night visit to Serena’s cell which is not a cell by any means, June’s wrath is finally unleashed, seven long years after Gilead first rose to power and stole her life away.

“The only thing you deserve,” June says, “is a life full of suffering and shame. You have destroyed my life, my family, my friends, my country, and my child. There is no less worthy of redemption than you”.

In what came to surprise for all that Serena does not respond with malice, instead, she is on her knees and says two words that no one expected from her “I’m sorry”. Of course, this does not erase all the wrongs she did and inflect upon June and her apology was not taken kindly by June herself she responded.

“Do you know why God made you pregnant?” she screams. “It’s so when he kills that baby inside, your womb will feel a fraction of the pain that you caused when you tore our babies from our arms. Do you understand me? DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME”? This could have easily turned out to be a finale but June’s story is not done just yet.
