The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4: Why can’t Nick help get out June from Gilead

Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 has been released and few episodes are streaming on Hulu, Finally, the tv adventure story continues, because the first 3 episodes of season four were released slightly ahead of schedule Tuesday night. The show follows the story of June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss), a girl who defies Gilead, a totalitarian nonsecular zealot society shaped within the U.S. after a war. June is a rebellious handmaid who disrupts the established order.

In the finale of the Handmaid’s Tale Season 3, June was working with the rebel network Mayday to get 86 kids and 9 Marthas out of Gilead on a plane to Canada. Her own Martha, Rita, boarded the plane, however, June stayed back, both to distract Gilead’s troopers (“Guardians”) and to search out her daughter Hannah, who was taken when Gilead formed and appointed to a family of nobles. Meanwhile, June’s original commander, Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), and his spouse, Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), whose wedding June wedged apart, aroused in Canada, selling one another out for separate immunity deals.

Season four picks up where everything left off with the Waterfords, the handmaids, and others coping with the results of June’s actions.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4: DOES NICK OWE ANY LOYALTY TO GILEAD?

Nick Waterford has ties to Mayday that enabled him to organize June’s escape attempt at the beginning of The Handmaid’s Tale season 2. Nick was actually a spy, reporting to Commander Pryce about the happenings at the Waterford house. It seems any loyalty that Nick had to Gilead is gone, especially when Pryce was killed in the bombing of the new Rachel and Leah Center. If Nick is a commander, why did he catch June instead of trying to free her? It certainly seems like any royal loyalty Nick had to the royal loyalty is gone. Let’s see by the end of Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 what will happen?

IF NICK IS ON THE WALL, HE CAN’T SAVE JUNE

Nick’s love for June appears to be the most important factor holding him back from helping her escape. As a commander, Nick is in a very distinctive and precarious position. He cannot afford to lift any suspicion that he is less than 100% loyal to Gilead. A full-blown escape attempt might finish with both of them hanging on the wall.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4: REASON BEHIND NICK CAPTURING JUNE AFTER HER ESCAPE?

Nick does everything he can to save June, in need of one thing that will compromise his role as a commander. Given how rarely The Handmaid’s Tale shows Nick’s aspect of the story, it’s possible that he really was spoiling the search for June for as long as he might. That might explain how she escaped capture for weeks, and why the Guardians came across the Keyes farm too late to capture the other handmaids.

DID NICK SECRETLY ASSISTED JUNE IN ELUDING IN “THE CROSSING”?

The Handmaid’s Tale Season four, Episode 3, “The Crossing,” featured the final escape of June. June and some other apprehended maids were being transferred to a Magdalena colony. They were wearing handcuffs, but they had no shackles on their feet and also the door of the truck wasn’t closed. It stands to reason that if Nick was leading the charge on June’s capture, he also scheduled to transfer her to the Magdalene colony. This theory raises the question of why Nick did not tell June that he had organized this opportunity for her to flee, but maybe he didn’t wish to pressure her into a vicious escape.
