Zack Snyder Explains Why Justice League Needs A Batman & Joker Scene

Published by

Justice League Updates: Zack Snyder explains why he took Jared Leto’s Joker back to the Justice League, saying that his rivalry is essential to the DCEU.

Zack Snyder offered some insight into why he got Jared Leto’s Joker back for his upcoming

Justice League cut. Snyder returns to DCEU after leaving the film during post-production in 2017. In addition to re-engineering hours of shot video, Snyder has made re-engines for the forthcoming four-hour HBO Max cut.

Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Ray Fisher all came in late last year, but the greatest surprise of all found out to be Leto’s return as Joker.

Justice League Trailer

Snyder contacted Leto, telling him to get on board for any more scenes. Fans had their first look at Leto’s upcoming Justice League look forward to the announcement of the film trailer on February 14.

The trailer finished with a live-action preview of Leto’s return, reviving the “We live in a society” meme and teasing Batfleck’s friendship with Leto’s Joker. The scene takes place during one of Batman’s Knightmares, but Snyder admits that there was a point in getting Leto back.

Joker and Batman’s past has been speculated about for a long time, but Snyder told Minutemen that he had brought Leto back to flesh out this history in a way that he would not be able to do in the future.

Snyder claims, and many fans are sure to believe, that Batman and Joker’s rivalry is fundamental to the DC universe and especially to its DCEU. Snyder claims that, at the end of the day, getting Leto back to the Justice League was his little way to give people a glimpse of the fight as he first imagined it.

It was most important to me that both the Batman and Joker had a scene to act together. Let’s be frank, Batman/Joker is a kind of rivalry that is fundamental to the world.

Frankly, it was a confrontation I had designed for the Knightmare series. And then, you know that [I] was happy to like it, to have a chance to do it, to get a little taste of it. So, I felt it was necessary for fans to see their Batman and Joker come to a minor confrontation in this cinematic universe.

The DCEU films have also made it clear that Batman and Joker have a long history in the film universe. Batman unexpectedly turns up in 2016’s Suicide Squad, where he captures Harley Quinn from Margot Robbie, so it’s a reference to the character in Batman v Superman who’s still in the fans’ minds.

In the Batcave, Batman’s ex-partner Robin’s suit is revealed, and splayed around the front are the words, “Hahaha, the joke’s on you, Batman.” Snyder wanted to discuss Robin’s death in a sequel to the Justice League, but it’s impossible to happen now that Snyder left DCEU alongside Affleck.

Snyder’s Justice League is potentially his final opportunity to make his imprint on DCEU, and the director is completely right that you can’t get Batman and Joker in the same world without exploring the complexities of the characters.

Leto is more than happy to go back to DCEU again and again, so it’s likely that we might see him again with another Batman, but Affleck is all but done with the franchise. Justice League is the only opportunity to see the couple together on the television, and Snyder does the right thing for the audience by getting them together.
