Black Doctor Who Update: The doctor is an iconic British television show which has been on air since 2005. In the 15 long years that it has been on the air, we have had several actors play Doctor Who.
William Hartnell, the enigmatic British actor, was the first to play this role. Since then, the show has put our fifteen adventurous seasons. Many people have played the role of Doctor who.
In 2017, Jodie Whittaker became the first woman to play the character. What we have not had still is a Black person playing the character.
Recently in an interview with the Guardian, actor, director, and writer Noel Clarke, presented his interest, to play Doctor Who.
Black Doctor Who: Update
Earlier this month, it was reported that Jodie Whittaker has decided to leave the show after the current season comes to an end. With the TARDIS left without a Doctor, it’ll be interesting to see who the creators of the show, pick to play the character.
Noel Clarke who was popularised, by his role in the television series Metrosexuality has already been in the show before.
He played the role of Mickey Smith, Rose Tyler’s (played by Billie Piper) boyfriend. Although he was only a traveler on the TARDIS initially, proved to be useful. By the time his last appearance on the show went on air, he had learned so much that he helped protect a parallel Earth from the Cyberman.
In his interview with the Guardian, he called himself a –
“Jack of all trades, master of none. I have had to be someone that has done everything. If I had not, I would not be talking to you right now.”
He talks about how it is important to put out shows with Black actors to create more representation and inclusivity.
At the end of his role with Doctor Who, we see his character Mickey Smith get married to Martha Jones played by Freema Agyeman. He is working closely with Torchwood and is working to protect planet Earth. Thereby becoming a Planet Defender.
Noel Clarke’s wish does raise an important question. How will the audience react to seeing a Black Doctor Who? Considering how the times are, having this will help Black people worldwide relate to something Iconic and will also help in making sure the Television space is more inclusive.
