This is a 2020 American drama film directed by George C. Wolfe and written by Ruben Santiago Hudson. The film will be streaming on Netflix from December 18, 2020.

Know About The Story Plot

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” is based on the novel by author August Wilson. Viola Davis stars as a legendary “blues singer “-Ma Rainey. The story is set in 1927, in Chicago when Ma and her band are all set to record songs.

As she takes a bit longer to return to the studio, the normal conversation among the band members heats up and they get involved in a fight.

On returning, Ma clashes with a hot-headed trumpeter Levee, and the white producer. The film also deals with the issues of race, religion, and historic exploitation of black artists.

Popular as “The Mother Of The Blues” Viola Davis is an African-American actress. She is two times Tony-winning, an Emmy Award-winning, and an Academy Awards winning actress.

Davis also won the best supporting actress Oscar for her 2016’s “Fences”, which is one of Wilson’s plays. Earlier, Davis won hearts with her best performances in shows like-“Doubt (2008)” and “The Help (2011)”.

Viola Davis will be the most nominated black actress in Oscar history as Ma Rainey if things go as expected.
Davis is the second black actress after Berry to win the lead actress Oscar.

Davis is the first to win awards in both lead and supporting roles. Davis is the 1st African-American actress to achieve the “Triple Crown Of Acting “by winning Competitive Oscar, Tony and Emmy Awards. Davis is also the only other black actress after Octavia Spencer to have received 3 Academy Awards nominations.

Davis has also featured in Times Magazine as the “100 Most Influential Stars”. With such an achieving background history, one can expect Viola Davis to make Oscar history.
